We are changing how children and young people with disabilities access health, education and livelihood opportunities.
Our Mission
The Action Foundation’s mission is to build inclusive and resilient communities where children, women and girls with disabilities thrive
Our Vision
We have a vision of a fully inclusive Africa where children, women and girls with disabilities can realize their maximum potential.
Our values
Our work is grounded in deep commitment and passion.
Our values can be summarized in the acronym “EXCITED,” which embodies our enthusiasm, passion and commitment to our work.
We are EXCITED because we believe that every child and young person with a disability deserves to be seen, heard and supported to reach their full potential.
We ensure the highest quality of service in all our interventions while keeping our communities at the heart of everything we do.
We achieve this by doing ordinary things with extraordinary effort, which inspires confidence in children, women, and girls with disabilities in the communities in which we work.
Children, women, and girls with disabilities are at an increased risk of neglect, violence, stigma, and discrimination. When parents, teachers, service providers, and community members recognize and understand these vulnerabilities, they can be more compassionate in their interactions with individuals who experience them. We aim to understand the background of each individual we work with and identify the most effective way to support them.
Through our initiatives, children, girls, and women with disabilities can creatively express themselves and develop innovative ways to address some of the challenges they face in their day-to-day lives. We think outside the box while fully embracing self-expression and leveraging technology.
Over the years, we have built a strong community of team members, individuals, families, friends, and partners who share our values and passion for our mission. This collaboration yields positive outcomes for the children, women, and girls we support. We believe that we can thrive in strong and inclusive communities when we each contribute our part.
By upholding empathy as a core value, we ensure that in everything we do, we understand and connect with the communities we serve. Acknowledging their lived realities empowers them to realize their full potential and helps us understand their perspective.
We are committed to promoting inclusion and diversity in all our endeavors. We accept, respect, and encourage the participation of all people regardless of their gender, culture, race, ethnic origin, economic class, nationality, family or marital status, background, religion, or difference in ability.
Our founding story
Our founder Maria Omare set up The Action Foundation (TAF) in 2010 after interacting with children with disabilities while volunteering at a Kenyatta University inclusive sports event.
Her volunteer experience opened her world to the realities of the lives of children with disabilities and inspired her to be a change-maker.
We are changemakers rooted in inclusion
The Action Foundation operates through a high-performing, inclusive and mission-driven team that blends technical expertise, lived experience, and strong community roots to drive systemic change for children with disabilities.
